Researchers found that natural chemicals in the atmosphere destroyed almost 50 % ozone in the west of equatorial Africa than expected. This process also reduced concentration of methane, another powerful greenhouse gas. It may well apply in the oceans around the world and if so, it would pose major questions about how earth's inventory of global warming gases is calculated.
Ozone, a naturally- occurring molecule composed of three oxygen atoms, can be beneficial or harmful to human life depending on where it is.In the atmosphere, 10 km to 50 km above above the earth's surface, ozone protect living thing by filtering out the sun's damaging ultraviolet light. But in the atmosphere, below 10 km , ozone is a noxious pollutant and the most important green house gas after CO2, methane, and water vapour, which thus makes it a driver of global warming.
