Reog is a traditional Indonesian dance form. There are many type of Reogs in Indonesia, but the most famous one is Reog Ponorogo. I think because its originaly from there. Honestly... I m affraid of this Reog. Because the dancers traditionally perform in a trance state. Everytime seeing them in the afternoon..at night sure will get bad dream about the Singo Barong chasing me. Very scary you know, Especially the Kuda Kepang Dancer. The can eat the glass... I mean the boken one. Eat it like kerupuk... no no noooo not krupuk... (I love kerupuk) like.. popocorn. Yeuuuuh... scary right?
This dance is staged about 25 - 40 dancers and the musician. the Singo Barong is the main leading figure.The dancer of Singo Barong must powerful because he has to bear the mask (Dadak Merak) about 30 - 40 kg weight and supported by the strength of their teeth. Reog dance, usually consists of three sets of dances. Each dance is performed by several dancers. The first dance is the opening dance, performed by male dancers wearing black costumes called Warok. The second dance is the Jaran Kepang dance; it is performed by dancers wearing colourful costumes. The third dance is the main attraction of the show; it is performed by all the Reog dancers. With the Singo Barong, (the one who wearing a large and heavy lion mask with the peacock feathers named DADAK MERAK) dances in the centre of the stage while the other dancers dance around him.
In the ancient time, all dancers of the Reog Ponorogo was a male. Even the genit kuda kepang (Jaran Kepang) dancers must performed by men. But now.. in modern day of reog... they use female to replace male as kuda kepang dancers. There are a legend, history and mistery surounding this reog ponorogo dance.
