Long way to get A better 'Maid day'

Indonesian maids are staying away from Malaysia due to low wages and Indonesian agents unhappy with low recruitment fees, its for true. The maids have not been encouraged by the Indonesian agents to come here. Because the wages of Indonesian maid are much less than offered by other countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore or Taiwan.

More thanmaid[1] 300,000 Indonesians now work as housemaids in Malaysia. The actual number is more higher than that. Malaysia is still no 1 destinations for Indonesian working abroad. But now, the country destinations is not depending to the maid to be. It's agents who choose with country the maid better go. They reconsider the wages, and the profit the agent will get.

The accord on maids’ rights already signed in 2006. The MOU is part of Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring the continued good relations between the two country. The agreement aim is to provide ‘more rights and shelter’ to the thousands of Indonesian maids in Malaysia. But till know, nothing come out in real. It's only look good in paper for the employer and the maid agency and the maid to be get nothing than promise for the better wages. Better wages means the salary increase, salary increase  means salary deductions increase too. So what kind of benefit maid get?

Look at this! In 2004, when I first time came in Malaysia as maid, my salary was RM 380 with salary deductions 5 month clean. Now, in 2008 maid salary is around RM 500 with 6 month deduction. But now life costs are rising due to higher fuel prices and food prices, so it wouldn't be much different.

Being maid means stay in someone house. Stay in somebody house for me is already a pressure. Good employer is first priority, salary is second. So, what the better "maid day" according to me as maid? What I want and I think all maids want is:

  1. Better working hour. Around 15 hour a day with 3 hour rest and 8 hours sleep time
  2. Good food and good hospitality.
  3. One day off every week.
  4. No shouting, scolding or abusing.
  5. No extra house.
