French is a Romance language which developed from the Latin spoken in Gaul. In Britain, the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the arrival of the french speaking ruling classes resulted in French becoming the language of the Church hierarchy.
Large number of French were adopted into English, including words conected with law and goverment, such as council, justice and tax. Also some abstract words such as charity, conflict and liberty. Some eventually replaced their Old English equivalents and sometime both language existed side by side, producing pairs of words which survive in English to day. Ex: Shut (old English) and Close (old French), Buy (old English) and Purchase (old French).
